Synthetic Benchmarks Overstate Forward-Forward Scaling: Real-Data Limits of Layer-Local Training

Researchers demonstrate that Forward-Forward (FF) layer-local learning, a biologically-plausible alternative to backpropagation, significantly underperforms on real-world image datasets despite closing gaps on synthetic benchmarks.
